Study seminar WORK, PARTICIPATION, DEMOCRACY PEOPLE, RIGHTS, CIVIL ECONOMY

It is since the last few years that the work – in Europe, in the heart of the West – became
the a main debate and quite increasingly worried and alarmed. The European debate on “decent work” has looked up until the last decade, outside its borders, towards the East and to the
many “souths” of the world. Today, the phenomena that is no longer considered hoped recessive or contingents, have reported that discussion in the heart of the old continent, not only for the eastern enlargement of the Union and not just restricting it in some (few) countries.
The main issue is that the work guarantees always less access to the citizenship and instrument of emancipation, learning, freedom and democracy. The close solidarity between work and social participation – especially if seen through the eyes of young people and women – seems to have broken, seriously threatening the stability and social welfare, the base of every development program.
Young people and women seem to be getting further from that goal of “good jobs” that the
knowledge society – according to the Lisbon strategy – should guarantee them. On the other
hand, the representation of the work, as we have known in Europe in ‘900, seems no longer be
able to give adequate answers...
